Copyright in materials published in Medicine, Science and Education remains with the authors or other lawful rights holders. Publication and reuse terms are established in the publishing agreement and identified in each article.
1. Authors’ and Publisher’s Rights
Before publication, rights holders grant the publisher the non-exclusive rights necessary for:
- first publication and distribution;
- hosting and preservation;
- indexing;
- technical conversion;
- application of the CC BY 4.0 license.
These rights are granted through a separate publishing agreement. Consent is not inferred from an author’s silence.
2. CC BY 4.0 License
New publications issued after the relevant revision of the journal’s Regulations takes effect are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), unless lawful restrictions on specific third-party materials are separately identified.
The license permits redistribution and adaptation, including commercial use, provided that users appropriately:
- credit the authors;
- identify the source;
- identify the license;
- indicate any changes made.
Each article’s webpage and PDF identify the rights holder, year, license name, and an active link to the license terms.
A general website copyright notice does not restrict the rights granted to readers under an article’s license.
3. Third-Party Materials
Authors must ensure compliance with the rights governing any third-party text, tables, images, and other materials used. Required permissions must be submitted to the editorial team before acceptance.
The source, permission, and any exclusions from the license are identified separately for third-party materials. The article’s license does not override restrictions explicitly stated for such content.
4. Deposit of Article Versions
Authors may deposit the preprint, accepted manuscript, and published version in repositories.
The deposited version must be correctly identified. Once the final published version—the Version of Record—becomes available, a link to it must be provided.
5. Previously Published Materials
Previously published articles retain the terms that applied when they were issued. Licenses must not be changed retrospectively without the necessary consent of the rights holders.
6. Publishing Agreement
A separate publishing agreement is signed before publication and includes:
- details of the rights holder and the material;
- the non-exclusive rights granted;
- the terms governing application of CC BY 4.0;
- arrangements for depositing article versions;
- conditions governing third-party materials;
- applicable payment terms.
